A colourful orange to orange-red South Africa bulb, Watsonia pillasii will probably be too tender for many areas but is easily be grown in conservatory pots. Fill them with with loam-based compost like John Innes nº 2, with added horticultural grit and leafmould. Water freely when in growth and apply a liquid feed every month. When dormant, keep it just moist. If you want to chance growing it outside, plant it at the foot of a sheltered, sunny wall where the soil is free.draining. As a precaution, add a protective winter mulch to insulate the roots.
